12 new basketball coaches successfully achieved the England Basketball Level 1 Coaches Award through the summer as part of the R&T coach education program which is being run in partnership with Lambeth & Southwark Sports Action Zone.

The course was managed and run by R&T, with support from the London Region of England Basketball, primarily for the Lambeth and Southwark communities - with 8 of the 12 coaches coming from the 2 boroughs. The Level 1 course provided a certified introduction into coaching for the interested participants which will be built upon with further coach education programs as part of the R&T/SAZ partnership.

The final day of the course was attended by England Basketball's London Regional Development Manager, Steve Alexander, who commented "There is a very real capacity issue across the London boroughs with regards to qualified, quality coaching - basically, we don't have enough coaches! This program put on by Sports Action Zone and Reach & Teach is the kind of thing we support wholeheartedly as it links into our wider development plans for Basketball in London, producing more certified coaches for the London community."

R&T's Jackson Gibbons, who co-ordinated the course, added "Our aim is to provide more quality coaching and playing opportunities throughout London and a fundamental key in being able to do that is having a pool of fully certified, police-checked coaches to draw from. We already have a growing database of coaches and we aim to add to that from the local community so we can eventually arrive at that point of having local coaches deliver local programs which is an often overlooked need in building any type of long-term sustainability in the community."
