Friday the 11th of April marked the start of something special in the London Borough of Haringey. LSB officially launched the Troy Tigers Basketball Club with an exciting 3on3 basketball tournament at Ducketts Common, arguably the finest playground basketball court in London.
The Tigers aim to fill a void in community basketball within Haringey, through the provision of regular coaching sessions, competitions and the opportunity to play for a local team in the upcoming Community Basketball League. The club is being developed as part of the LSB, alongside supporting partners from Haringey Sports Development Trust and ‘I Am Finest’.
The 3on3 tournament turned out to be a huge success, with a great turnout and beautiful weather to compliment the basketball action. Boys and girls from the local area competed against other players from across London who made the trip over to North London’s finest outdoor courts. The competition drew close to 100 ballers between the ages of 13-19, all focused on playing basketball, picking up new skills and forging new friendships – whilst trying to win their way through to the ‘Troy Tigers 3on3’ championship.
There is little doubt that the local Haringey basketball legacy is in good hands as the talent on display was of the highest order! However, ultimately there could only be one winner in each age category and so it came down to a final between ‘Panthers’ and ‘Bucket Team’ in the U14’s division while ‘Swingmen’ took on ‘X-Factor’ in the U18 division. Both games were well contested, with ‘Bucket Team’ winning the U14’s crown and team ‘X-Factor’ earning the U18 title.
Prizes for each winning team, alongside NBA2K14 games for the team MVP’s were well received by all and were awarded by London Lions professional players Julius Joseph and Perry Lawson who enjoyed the days festivities. “This is what the LSB is all about, providing new opportunities for local youngsters to get involved in the game of basketball. I’ve been impressed with the passion and talent on display today and look forward to following the Troy Tigers as they continue to build on this great start” said England International, Perry Lawson.
Troy Tigers head coach Kevin Yiminyi added “We’re excited to be working with the London School of Basketball and have big plans ahead for the development of the club so we can reach more young players across the borough. Haringey Sports Development Trust have been great too and we’re already planning more events like this for later in the summer. Our club welcomes players of all abilities, so if you want to get involved with coming to any of our sessions or being involved in future events get in touch and let’s build upon what we’ve started here today”.
