The R&T Community Basketball League provides structured grassroots competition for young people from inner city communities and is comprised of teams that are based in the local areas in which they live.
The league provides regular central venue league
competition for both males and females at the under 20, under 18, under 16, under 14 and under 12 levels. While always competitive, the level of the league is intended to provide participants with their first experience of organised league competition - serving as a bridge between absolute beginners and the national league level.
The overall aim of the league is to increase grassroots participation through the provision of quality playing and learning opportunities, while promoting and developing positive charateristics and good citizenship in young people using basketball as the tool. Experience has taught us that any long-term success within community sports provision is developed through establishing accessible and relevant opportunities, building local capacities through appropriate training and development programming and adopting an inclusive partnership approach between community stakeholders, local residents and the wider develoment and funding agencies who are committed to helping action positive change. We adopt and adapt this way of working in the planning, delivery and development of the CBL.
In addition, R&T are continually working to bring new resources into the league which are shared out equally amongst all affiliated clubs, while helping develop clubs thorugh league run workshops and short courses, so the league is able to continue to grow and flourish.
The league was originally developed from the R&T community basketball plan, to provide competitive participation pathways for the new locally run clubs that are being developed as part of the strategy through the Ball For All program. The clubs are aimed at providing young people, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, with the opportunity to learn to play basketball, join a team and compete in a safe and secure environment - within their own areas. R&T's role in the development of the clubs and now the league, is to help manage and administrate wherever necessary and to help build local capacities so communities can take ownership of their own clubs in providing long-term sustainable outlets for all participants.
The Community Basketball League is aimed at all grassroot youth teams who are below the national league level, offering a well-run, entry level league for players to participate and compete in. The league features divisions at the U20, U18, U16, U14, U12 age groups for boys and girls. While many of the teams involved in the league have been developed through the R&T Ball For All program, the league is open to any non-national league club looking for structured entry-level competition for their developing young players.
