Reach & Teach is a non-profit, community sports organisation who focus on using basketball as a tool to engender positive social, academic, physical and vocational development in young people, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Understanding sports have the potential to attract, engage, and nurture the interests of young people, we strive to utilise that interest in introducing and developing skills that support development in all areas of their lives. Basketball, in particular, is the sport of choice of inner-city youth. The fast, exciting, flamboyant style of the game and its social influence, provide the perfect platform to engage and relate to young people. Through our programs, we build upon these relationships and provide the support and direction towards a positive end. Our agenda is to use the game of basketball to better prepare young people for the game of life, developing the characteristics and life skills that contribute towards good citizenship, while facilitating improved access to opportunity for traditionally excluded groups.
We believe in youth investment and the right of every young person to be able to pursue their dreams, regardless of their background. Through our work, we strive to remove obstacles that currently hinder participation and progression, so that young people may pursue new experiences and widen their horizons, so they may evolve to expect more for themselves and of themselves.
The future of any community lays in the hands of its youth, at R&T we’re driven by what we believe to be a fundamental social responsibility to ‘reach’ out to young people and ‘teach’ them skills they can actually
use to achieve a better quality of life for both themselves and the neighbourhoods in which they live.
The R&T core team is comprised of basketball 'specialists', vocational training and community sports development professionals with over 50 collective years experience in our respective fields. We are committed to helping build stronger, more united communities through our work and focus our programs on increasing local capacities from the inside out. What distinguishes R&T from other 'providers' is our first-hand knowledge, experience and nationally acclaimed track record within community based basketball provision. We've been able to be successful with our programmes because our core team accutely understand and relate to the issues affecting disadvantaged and marginalised young people, because we've come from the same place. Our programmes are not 'parachuted' in from the outside, based on de-sensitised theory, but rather developed from within through local understanding, community commitment and cohesion - and are geared towards achieving local solutions to local problems.
